Bad Guys at School varies-with-devices 4. The problem with UTF-8 is that it is not the most space efficient encoding.
Also, some random binary byte sequences are invalid UTF-8 encoding. So you can't just interpret a random binary byte sequence as some UTF-8 data because it will be invalid UTF-8 encoding. The benefit of this constrain on the UTF-8 encoding is that it makes it robust and possible to locate multi byte chars start and end whatever byte we start looking at.
As a consequence, if encoding a byte value in the range [ Worse than that. So the binary data would require some transformation to be properly encoded. Let see. If we assume uniformly distributed random byte values in our binary data then, on average, half of the bytes would be encoded in one bytes and the other half in two bytes.
What about using another Base encoding? In 8 bits you can store 7 bits. Better than Base But a Base93 encoding would not be as convenient as a Base64 encoding. Base64 requires to cut the input byte sequence in 6bit chunks for which simple bitwise operation works well. This is why I came independently to the common conclusion that Base64 is indeed the best choice to encode binary data in JSON.
My answer presents a justification for it. I agree it isn't very attractive from the performance point of view, but consider also the benefit of using JSON with it's human readable string representation easy to manipulate in all programming languages.
If performance is critical than a pure binary encoding should be considered as replacement of JSON. If you deal with bandwidth problems, try to compress data at the client side first, then baseit. By yEnc became the de facto standard encoding system for binary files on Usenet.
For example on Java platform there are libraries that can do the job rather efficiently, so that overhead is mostly due to expanded size. Smile format. Since you're looking for the ability to shoehorn binary data into a strictly text-based and very limited format, I think Base64's overhead is minimal compared to the convenience you're expecting to maintain with JSON.
If processing power and throughput is a concern, then you'd probably need to reconsider your file formats. The Google Gears team ran into the lack-of-binary-data-types problem and has attempted to address it:. Blob API.
JavaScript has a built-in data type for text strings, but nothing for binary data. The Blob object attempts to address this limitation. Just to add the resource and complexity standpoint to the discussion. A multi-part message is often used as a savior but for simplicity reason and for more complex tasks, I prefer the idea of giving the content as a whole.
It is self-explaining and it is simple. And the overhead of mapping to BASE64 is a way to small. Also liking the BSON approach, this is not that widely and easily supported as one would like it to be. Basically, we just miss something here but embedding binary data as base64 is well established and way to go unless you really have identified the need to do the real binary transfer which is hardly often the case.
I dig a little bit more during implementation of base , and expose that when we send characters which ascii codes are bigger than then browser chrome in fact send TWO characters bytes instead one :.
The reason is that JSON by defaul use utf8 characters for which characters with ascii codes above are coded by two bytes what was mention by chmike answer. Then we look inside that json file:. An old school method that's been around since three years after the dawn of time would be the Intel HEX format. If you want more reliability by sacrificing size, replace "binary" with "base64".
Data type really concerns. I have tested different scenarios on sending the payload from a RESTful resource. Recently Updated! This article was recently updated with new information on September 14, after the release of the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max. No, iOS! Galaxy S21! No, iPhone 13! The debate goes on and on. Are Android phones or iPhones better? Read on to find out why an Android phone is better than an iPhone.
You have green Android text messages?! Well, welcome to my world. In which case I ask, why are Androids bad? I mean really, what is bad about Android? They are two of the best smartphones in My Android phone has a more beautiful screen, a better camera, can do way more things with more features, and costs less than your top of the line iPhone.
The fact of the matter is, Android phones have come a really long way over the years and are much better today than they ever used to be. Android 11 , which is the latest operating system OS built by Google, has come a very long way since its inception.
Gone are the days where Android would become extremely slow and bogged down, especially with a 2-year-old phone. I can certainly vouch for the fact that Android phones used to become very slow after they were used for a couple of years.
I owned a Samsung Galaxy S5 back in when I first wrote this post. It was an incredible phone, but it slowed down as time went on which was frustrating.
Talk about shady business practices. The phone is sleek with a stunningly gorgeous screen and not to mention extremely FAST. The best part? The phone is by far the fastest I have ever used and there has been absolutely zero slow down. The Android customization options are mind-blowing. I can change nearly every aspect of the phone to my liking and make the phone my own more on that in the Customization section below. The notifications, the reminders, my Google Discover news feed… it shows me exactly what I want to see when I want to see it.
Easily one of the biggest advantages of the Android operating system is the Google Assistant. The Google Assistant is infinitely better than Apple Siri. Ask the Google Assistant to do anything for you or a question on the web, and she will respond almost instantly with the correct information. Google has an entire set of pages dedicated to teaching you all about the Google Assistant if you want to learn more. The Google Play Store is fantastic. It is well laid out, extremely user-friendly, and offers about any type of app that you can think of.
They use a very simplistic UI which is beautiful. If you are looking to buy a brand new iPhone or Android phone, do you want the best bang for your buck? Of course you do. Who wants to pay significantly more for an iPhone which has fewer features and is less powerful than a flagship Android phone? Easily one of the top 10 reasons why an Android phone is better than an iPhone has always been the price and affordability.
For the hardware that comes inside Android phones, Android phones offer much better value for the money than iPhones. If iPhones came with the same hardware as flagship Android phones, Apple would most likely charge almost double compared to what Android companies such as Samsung and Google charge. Apple nickels and dimes you for everything. Seriously, Apple? I believe that the hardware and features category really solidifies the debate between Android vs Apple.
With specs such as double the RAM 12 GB vs 6 GB , a higher screen-to-body ratio, a more beautiful pixel-dense screen, a brighter screen so you can see your screen better outdoors nits vs nits , a vastly larger battery, faster charging, and the ability to record 8K video, it should be a no-brainer that the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G is the clear winner when compared to the iPhone 13 Pro Max when it comes to hardware.
Not to mention, the camera improvements should be more than enough to convince you to buy a Samsung phone over an iPhone. The Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G has an insane MP main camera, a second 12 MP camera with 3x optical zoom , a third 12 MP camera ultra-wide lens, and an added 4th camera with 10x optical zoom vs only 2x optical zoom in the iPhone with a laser autofocus sensor… oh, and you can record video in 8K.
My favorite part about Android phones — customization. A LOT. If you enjoy being able to customize your phone and have absolute freedom on what you can do with your phone, then Android is absolutely the way to go. Just download a third-party keyboard app that replaces the stock one. Download a new launcher.
Want to make your phone have a layout exactly like a Windows phone? Yep, you can do that, too. Where has this been with iOS? Well, Apple likes to keep things simple and user-friendly which is fine. Why, then, with the release of each iOS version, does Apple copy many things that Android has had for a long time now?
Widgets on your home screen announced with iOS 14 , predictive text on your messages, a health app, third-party keyboards, Swype texting, cloud storage for all your photos, and more. Android thanks to Google had all of these features long before Apple released them with new iOS versions. Android wins. There are new innovative features pushed out almost every time a major company releases a new Android phone. From in-screen fingerprint sensors to foldable phones, mobile devices that run Android always seem to have a leg up on the competition.
I think most people would agree that ever since Tim Cook took over Apple after Steve Jobs passed, Apple has had next to no innovation with each new iPhone release.
Every single event that Apple holds where they announce new iPhones or an update to iOS, I always get excited hoping for something new and innovative.
This is a fine strategy and it works for them, however, I miss the days when Apple would surprise the masses of people with new innovative features. This somewhat ties in with the Customization section, but Widgets have long been a huge advantage of Android over iOS. Having widgets on my Android home screens is one of my favorite things about Android.
Funny enough, Apple finally decided that having widgets on your home screen was more beneficial than they thought and announced the feature with iOS 14 in Android offers all sorts of widgets that you can put onto your home screens.
These widgets might be anything from a custom clock, weather, alarms, direct calls to contacts in your phone, flashlight, email, messages, and so much more. You can arrange these any which way on your home screens and have your home screens be exactly the way you want them. You simply open up the multitask window and you can drag two apps that you want to use at the same time in the appropriate boxes see the picture above. For example, I am watching a YouTube video while accessing my file system at the same.
Perhaps you want to watch a lecture video while taking notes right below the video? Or, watch a video while texting your friends? Go for it. Since Android has had multitasking for so long and does it so well, they still take the cake over iOS. The majority of Android phones offer expandable memory.
That means you can pop open an additional slot on the side of your phone and put in a micro SD card which then becomes added memory to your phone. What does Apple do? Well, they have never offered expandable memory for the iPhone. Instead, they would rather you pay them an unwarranted amount of money to upgrade your iPhone from the base 64GB capacity to one with GB or GB of internal storage.
Are you serious? My phone now has GB of capacity, and how much did that cost me? The serviceability of Android phones has been better meaning easier and less expensive than iPhones for a long time now. Some Android phones still today have a removable battery that you yourself can take out and replace or service to your liking. After you use any phone for a while, the lithium-ion battery inside of it will start to lose its original capacity.
Once they go through enough charge cycles, they are only able to hold a certain percentage of their original capacity. If you were to try changing the battery yourself or had a non-Apple-certified store service it, then you can say goodbye to your AppleCare warranty which already costs an arm and a leg.
If your Android phone has a removable battery, you can just go on Amazon and buy a generic battery for whatever type of phone you have and pop it in. All hail USB chargers! They are the standard charger for countless devices out there including Android phones. What does Apple have? Well, they decided to make their own chargers called lightning cables. Not only are these different and only usable for Apple devices, but they tend to be extremely low quality.
Why would Apple do this, you ask? Because it makes them more money. Plus, when your Apple charger goes bad, you have to fork over even more of your hard-earned money to buy a new one. Have a look for yourself at the reviews:. This is extremely, extremely shady.
Apple, please be ethical and allow product reviews on your pages again so people can make an informed purchase. Back when Apple actually showed product reviews on their pages as any company should , these are what the ratings were:.
The above Apple chargers were rated an average of 1. Once again, borderline thievery. All of the major Android phones have a dedicated physical back button.
Or, nowadays, an in-screen dedicated back button. This has always been a huge advantage in my eyes of Android phones over iPhones. With phone screens getting larger again, reaching up in the upper-left every single time to hit a back button is neither simple nor intuitive.
With Android phones, the back button sits at the very bottom of the screen where your fingers are already resting. Also, Androids are very customizable, remember? So, do you want the back button on the left side, center, or right side of the screen? Switch it with the tap of an option.
All in all, both Android phones and iPhones have their advantages and disadvantages. I could write an article about how an iPhone is better than an Android as well, but the Android advantages way overpower the advantages that you get with an iPhone in my opinion. If you enjoy the advantages listed in this article such as having an abundance of phone choices, customization, better hardware, and expandable memory just to name a few, go with an Android phone. Samsung, LG, Sony, and other major companies have started to outdo Apple, especially in the hardware department, and Apple has some catching up to do if they hope to keep competing with other flagship phones.
The best part is, all of these companies coming out with great phones constantly heats up the competition, and competition is great for us consumers. Competition is what brings us these cutting-edge technologies, phones, operating systems, and prices at such a fast pace. Jake is the founder of Crambler. Android phones are too tall and narrow for my hand shape and size. All that height is not used by my and i use my phone a LOT!!! The only reason I can see a use is for videos but would use a pc or tablet I can see that the specs for an android are a LOT better than for an android power ram camera processor etc etc Plllleeeease android phone suppliers make us a 4.
Hey Brian! I appreciate you bringing this up. There are tons of flagship Android phones that are much cheaper when you compare feature for feature. Or even check out the OnePlus 8T. I hated the phone with iphone looks on it. Andriod nailed iphone. I love my galaxy s9plus, a phone with no issues. I owned Galaxy S2 and then upgraded later to S5. It was fun, but became sluggish after a couple of months. Then later I switch to IPhone 5, and boy! I was impressed with performance! If you are going to compare specs of it vs the latest flagship devices for Android from its time, you know its underpowered.
But when you actually experience it. You will know the difference in performance, even after 2 years! No performance degradation that I can remember. I tried a lot of customizations, including changing fonts, launchers, and tested variety of ROMs.
But later, I went back to stock Samsung ROM, because it felt worst than the stock in terms of performance. For the camera — even with my former iPhone 5 — I was already satisfied with it. For the battery? For external storage?
As for water resistance — the latest and recent iPhones now have it as well — so no contest here anymore. It simply works and performs well as you expect it, no ifs no buts. Great article! I have the S10 now and was an apple user for 10 years. While the camera is better, Samsung service is no where near Apple service. If you travel, Apple is the way to go hands down. If something happens to your phone, you can go in any Apple store and the warranty is good. I was not aware that Samsung only warranties their phone in the country purchased.
So, if something happens to your phone while you are on vacation or a work trip, be prepared to pay out of pocket for all repairs. Told me that it was under warranty in the country of purchase but if I needed it fixed right away that is what I had to pay. To me…. Hi Jennifer, thanks for the comment! Android phones have the best cameras to date right now with the Google Pixel leading the pack.
That should be based on your carrier and what connection you have with it. Insurance on a phone can be provided by the phone manufacturer itself, carriers Verizon, US Cellular, etc or even third-party companies. Good luck on your journey back to Apple! Apple takes it seriously.
Yes I did order the New 11 Pro phone and it has even better security features. Get an android if your that geeky and like to play with technology. Yes, security has been a key focus for Apple for a long time. Hopefully the new iPhone 11 Pro works well for you! Thanks for your input. Privacy and security is a fallacy Apple want you to believe. I feel embarrassed for you.
Apple has the skill to manufacture premium bodies for their products and a tradition of slightly low hardware specs and with that said, you only buy apple if you intend to be adored by others but truly speaking you will be holding an empty apple.
Android Knows very well that people are different and leave a room for you to choose your taste, quality and style. Apple is prestigious and android is a window to endless possibilities. Hi Dom, thanks for the comment. The gesture system in iOS is beautiful. Everything is fluid and intuitive. Obviously being a developer you must realize how genuinely shit the iPhones are. There for small minded incompetence folks who cant use a computer.
Android is a computer. Apple still is a smart-phone or at least it thinks it is. Keeping fooling yourself and read the specs on that phone. Thank you for this informative article it is very neutral and not bias in any way. My Note 9 sounds like crap though spotify vs iPhone on the same app lol. Just use what suit your needs people and quit arguring about which is better because at the end of the day all our phones will be outdated with in a year.
Hi Spence! Thanks for the comment. Absolutely agree with you. It will be a vast improvement over the mediocre messaging systems Android phones have had all these years.
In the end, as you said, people should use whatever phone suits their needs. Really appreciate your insight! I love it and it has end to end encryption and you can sync to a pc and do backups to Google drive. WhatsApp is fantastic! Probably my favorite messaging app for Android. Yes, this is what iPhone owners need to read! The people in my family who have iPhones find loads of problems like low storage space, bad battery life whereas the ones with android phones including me, i have motorola one never ever experience problems!
Hi, Joseph! Low storage space tends to be a more common problem for iPhones since the base storage is generally lower than phones like the Samsung Galaxy S10 and iPhones have never had the ability to add an external SD card.
Therefore, you have to purchase iCloud storage instead. I have tried an IPhone in the past. I would never use an IPhone again. Hi, Belinda! I just purchased it a couple of months ago and the number of customization options it has is incredible. These points are not really a reasonable explanation, and closer to a blatant attack. Yes, both phones have their own advantages and disadvantages. This common argument is more like comparing apples to oranges no pun intended.
However, I do not view Android phones as bad, rather, just another smartphone out there. When making an argument, I would consider looking at both sides of the issue rather than just finding and and every way your side is better than the other.
Thank you for taking the time to write the article! It was very… entertaining. Hi, Tyler! I appreciate you stopping by and giving your opinion. Saying that this article is a blatant attack makes you just seem butthurt when the whole point of the article is to list off key reasons as to why he thinks android phones have better features than iPhones.
I find your comment very… entertaining. Alot of it is factual. You are controlled by what apple wants and no freedom to do what you want to do. I learned my lesson a while back that apple is greedy and want to monetise everything. I am currently using iphone because my samsung was too old, i was using it for like 5 years or so, and my father gave his iphone to me.
And i regret it so much. And I am so pissed, that I can cry. If this happened with samsung there were so many options how to open your phone, without losing all data. Seriously, I love samsung and I agree with all the above advantages. Everything is much more simplier with android, ios just makes things harder. Thank you for your comment, Amelia! Do you mind me asking what ways you opened your Samsung phone without knowing a password?
He neglects to mention that android phones do not outperform the newest iPhones when put through actual tests. All the ram and cpu power for androids looks good but keep in mind that apples silicon has always run better with their iPhones. Androids are completely different machines that need why looks on paper to be superior. Long term usage definitely show how android devices do not hold up compared to older iPhones.
Hi, Justin. I have watched several videos on performance comparisons between the latest Android phones and iPhones.
Yes, Apple has some higher benchmark scores, especially in the single-threaded category. However, several Android phones do get higher benchmarks in multi-threaded tasks due to their octa-core processors and such. Regardless, the numbers these phones are getting are so close together that no average user is going to notice a difference in performance. This is true when considering the debacle with Apple devices with the latest update having a glitch where if someone used facetime to contact you, they could see and hear you without you answering the call.
Absolutely agree with you, Jayden. Take the iCloud hack where many photos were leaked on the Internet or the latest Apple debacle that you mentioned where you could listen in on a FaceTime call without the person actually answering the call. Companies can preach about privacy, but there will always be mistakes made in the software that allow unauthorized breaches. Hi Calvin! I watched your entire video and really enjoyed it.
Thanks for the comment! I would always go with Android with iphone not just because of the various features you compared. But, mainly because of the price. Will consider purchasing iphone, if they ever consider manufacturing them in India to cut down the price.
They have been on an upward trend for pricing for several years now. You get much more bang for your buck by purchasing an Android phone over an iPhone.
I have never solidly stay on apple, I will always go back to Android since you can get a Samsung then a Google Pixel, or any google device and still have your data with the Play store app.
Samsung for life!!! You are comparing way to broad of a spectrum. It would be iOS vs android or Apple vs Samsung. Millions of phones run Android, and only iPhones run iOS. Hi Kevin! Thanks for stopping by. However, I wanted to write an article comparing iPhones to all other Android phones with an emphasis on the large Android flagship phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S10 and their hardware.
I hope that helps clear things up. This completely disregards the fact that Government agencies are also regulated under the Bill; they are major collectors and processors of data themselves. The sweeping powers the Bill gives to the Government render meaningless the gains from the landmark K.
